A New Friend...

Today we had a new friend come to visit. George, a service dog who is in training, came to read with the kids today. They did a great job of showing him what a classroom looks like and sounds like! All the kids got a chance to read their rough draft of their personal narrative to George. We hope that he can come back again sometime this year!

I "Mustache" you a question...

I think I have the most creative kids at Cedar Heights in my class! The kids came up with a great poster for our door during Red Ribbon Week. I am so proud of them!

Creative Continent Commercials

I am so impressed with the work the kids did on these commercials! As you may know, we researched continents and then the kids had to create a commercial. The goal was to have Mr. Wiebers choose to visit the continent based upon the information they shared in their commercial. I am so proud of how hard they worked and for the interesting facts they came up with. Enjoy watching your creative kids!

Rensselaer Russel House, Mills, and Simple Machienes

We had a great day at the Rensselar Russel House and Imaginarium today. We learned about simple machines and mills at the Imaginarium, and about the life in a house in the Victorian era. Hope these images spark some discussion tonight!

Prairie Rapids Crossing and Sturgis Falls

Today we had a great time at our First day of Museum School! If your child came home did not give you much information about the day you can ask the following questions.

What year did Iowa became a state?
What was the original name of Waterloo?
What was the original name of Cedar Falls?
What parts of the buffalo did the Native Americans use?
What was the most important part of the log cabin?
What was their favorite fact of the day?

Below are some fun pictures from the day!

My View at Work...

As I sat down today to read to the kids I had a thought... not everyone is blessed to interact with wonderful kids all day! I am very thankful for these kids and for the great start we have had to this school year! I have to say, my view at work is pretty awesome! Thank you parents for sharing your child with me!

Smoke Trailer

Our wonderful Cedar Falls Fire Department came to Cedar Heights today to visit with the kids about fire safety. We were able to go through the "Smoke Trailer" and not only hear about, but also put some of the things they taught us today. It was a great learning experience and all the kids seemed to really take away a lot of valuable information! So if you notice that your 3rd grader is acting like a fire expert... it's probably because they ARE one after this training!

The start of something NEW!

This week we started two new and exciting units in our class... Studying Crayfish and Reading On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The kids really seem excited about both!

Tonight, ask your child what they know already about the crayfish. The little scientists observed them today and took notes about the crayfish structures! Many of them have even gotten up the courage to pick them up!

We did it!!!

I couldn't be prouder of these kids and the effort they put forth on the Iowa Assessment! They worked so hard through EVERY test! We celebrated today by having popsicles and an extra long afternoon recess. Believe it or not, they had some excess energy to burn off after three days of testing! As you can tell, they are overjoyed to be done! Happy Thursday!

The Crayfish are here!!

Yesterday our crayfish arrived at school! The kids are very excited to feed them, touch them (well some of them are excited for that), and study them. Let me tell you... these crayfish are big and bad! Today we moved them for the first time and fed them. It was so fun to watch the kids try and muster up the courage to pick them up. We moved them into their "feeding troff" and the crayfish became quite territorial! I am sure we will have several fun story's that come from this unit!

Let the Adventures begin...

I am so excited for this new adventure that blogging will bring to our classroom! It is my hope that this will help parents feel more connected to what is going on in our classroom.
